Gary Schmelz photo.jpeg

Gary was the Director of the Big Cypress Nature Center and

Director of Education for The Conservancy of Southwest Florida, where he designed curriculum for students in preschool through

grade 8. Additionally, he assisted in the development of the Marjory

Stoneman Douglas Nature Center on Key Biscayne, Florida, and

served on the board and as president of the Bailey-Matthews

National Shell Museum on

Sanibel, Florida.

Gary has traveled extensively in the Bahamas and Caribbean.

His publications include The Gift, a young adult novel; Native Wildflowers of Southwest

Florida (with Glen Stacell); a memoir, Journey to the Edge of Eden; and a photographic

book, Fabulous Florida Fossil Shells.
